Common questions

Is this an official NIC or state board app?

No. This is independent study material, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC), any state licensing board, or any testing vendor. The app does not administer, proctor, or score the real exam; your state board and its vendor do that. What this app does is get you ready for it.

Where does the content come from?

Every flashcard, practice question and lesson was written from public sources — OSHA, CDC, EPA, FDA and NIOSH publications, state board rules, the published exam content outlines, and open reference works — and each one names the source it was checked against. Where a state's rule is quoted, the state is named. The wording is original; no exam questions are reproduced.

Is this the exam my state uses?

Most states use the NIC national theory exam, and the app's mock exam matches its shape: 100 scored questions, 90 minutes, weighted by the published outline. California, New York and Georgia give their own written exams and Florida requires none; they test the same core knowledge. The "Taking the exam" guide in the app lists what we could verify for each state, and your board's website is the final word.

Is this medical or product advice?

No. Where the app covers skin and nail conditions, it teaches recognition and the salon decision — service, service with care, or refer to a physician — never treatment. Where it covers products and procedures, the manufacturer's directions and your state's rules always govern.

Will passing the practice exams here mean I pass the real one?

It is a good signal, not a guarantee. The mock exams use the same question count, time limit and 75 percent pass line as the national exam and draw questions by domain in the outline's proportions. A comfortable pass here means you know the material. The real exam is proctored and stressful in a way an app cannot reproduce, so take several mocks, not one.

My progress disappeared

Progress is stored on your device only, so it does not survive deleting the app, resetting the device, or moving to a new phone without restoring a backup. If it vanished without any of those, that is a bug and we want to hear about it — tell us what you did just before it happened.

I think an answer is wrong

Tell us, and please include the question or card text (there is a "Report a problem" link under every explanation, and a "Report a content error" link in Settings). Every item was checked against its source by two independent review passes, but the material is detailed and we would rather fix a mistake than defend it.

Does the app cover the practical exam?

There is a guide to the NIC practical — the seven timed sections, what is graded in each, the kit list with a packing checklist, and the rules — built from the published candidate bulletin. It is a guide, not a substitute for practising the services with your instructor.

Do you offer refunds?

Purchases go through Apple, so refunds do too. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot issue refunds directly because we never handle the payment.
